VERNE FANKHAUSER Verne Fankhauser, 83, of Elmdale, died Wednesday, September 21, 2011, at his home. A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, at 10:00 A.M., at the Elmdale United Methodist Church in Elmdale. Pastor Warren Olson will officiate at the service. Burial will follow in the Elmdale Cemetery. The son of Clarence F. and Lydia Emch Fankhauser, Verne was born August 18, 1928, at Lamont, KS. He graduated from Lamont High School in 1946. He worked in the oil fields of Greenwood County. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 until 1953. Following the service, he worked as a mechanic for Tom’s Motor Co. in Emporia before returning to the farm. He married Betty Wilson on June 5, 1955, at Nash, OK, and they moved to a farm near Elmdale, KS., where they lived and continued to farm. Mr. Fankhauser was a member of the Elmdale Methodist United Church in Elmdale, serving as a chairman of the board and treasurer of the trustees. He was a district director of the Kansas Farmers Union, was a member of National Farmers Union, and Chase County Farmers Union where he served as president and vice president. He served as a Chase County Commissioner, director of the Chase County Cattleman’s Association and on the ASCS board. He was a volunteer with the Elmdale Fire Department and he was a vice president and director of the Mesa Roadrunners Motorcycle Club. He served on the Chase County Water Drainage District #2 and was Republican committee chairman for the Diamond Township. He is survived by his wife, Betty, of the home; a son, Darrell Fankhauser of Overland Park, KS.; a daughter, Carol Ann Fankhauser Kohr, of Elmdale, KS.; a brother, Loy Fankhauser, of El Dorado, KS; four grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gene Fankhauser. The family will meet friends Friday, September 23, from 6:30 until 7:30, at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home.
