Cottonwood Falls Dateline Vera M. Hursh, 91, died Friday, October 30, 2009, at the Morris County Hospital in Council Grove, KS. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, November 3, 2009, at 10:00 A.M., at the Matfield Green Cemetery in Matfield Green, Kansas with The Rev. Billie Blair of the Matfield Community Church officiating. Vera Marie Underwood, the daughter of Clyde Lewis and Lula May Harlan Underwood, was born July 30, 1918, in Matfield Green, KS. She attended grade school and high school in Matfield. She taught school two years in Chase County with a County Certificate and then received a 3-year Certificate from Emporia State Teachers College. On December 21, 1942, she married Donald Hursh in Emporia, KS. He died August 6, 2001. August 21, 1943, Donald went to Italy for two years and Vera worked in the payroll department at Beech Aircraft in Wichita. In 1945, when Donald returned home from WWII, they moved to Matfield Green where Donald worked for Cities Service Gas Co. for 35 years. Vera worked in the grocery stores and as the City Clerk at times. She enjoyed fishing, camping, and traveling. In 1990, Donald and Vera moved to Strong City. She is survived by one sister, Betty Baker of Hutchinson, two nieces: Barbara Underwood Johnston of Missouri and Roberta Underwood Peterson of Colorado; and a nephew, Arnold (Sonny) Maner of Maryland. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and one sister. Friends may call at Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home Monday, November 2, 2009, from noon until 6:00 P.M.
