SAMUEL F. ROBERTS Cedar Point Dateline Samuel F. Roberts, 88, died Monday, May 19, 2008, at Via Christi-St. Francis in Wichita, KS. A celebration of life service will be held Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at 11:00 A.M., at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home in Cottonwood Falls. Pastor David Gass, minister of the Cedar Point Community Church, in Cedar Point will officiate. Interment, with military honors, will follow at Strong City Cemetery in Strong City, KS. The son of Thomas D. and Doris M. Langandorf Roberts, Samuel "Sam" Frederick Roberts was born June 9, 1919, in Strong City. He grew up on the Carson farm and attended school at Forest Hill. Sam and Irma Smith were married February 13, 1939, in Cottonwood Falls, KS. He served his country during World War II as a member of the 807th Engineer Aviation Battalion of the U.S. Army Air Corps stationed in Okinawa. He worked for Santa Fe Railroad for over 30 years retiring as a Road Master on July 1, 1979, at Dodge City, KS. He was a member of the American Legion in Florence and the Lowry Funston Post No. 1980 Veterans of Foreign Wars in Emporia. Sam loved to hunt coon and birds, fishing, and horseback riding even though he didn’t have much time to enjoy it until he retired. He was never "too tired" that he wouldn’t go help a friend or neighbor if they needed him. He was on the Cedar Point Council for several years. He also mowed grass and did odd jobs for the city. In the winter he did some woodwork to give away. He made lots of bird feeders and bird houses. He loved feeding and watching the birds and squirrels. Sam loved working in the garden and yard. He loved the trees, roses, and his family. He is survived by his wife, Irma, of the home; a son, Samuel "Rick" Roberts of Cedar Point; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Joyce Ann Cummings; a sister, Doris Roberta Cowley; and a half-sister, Eva Evans. Friends may call at the funeral home, Tuesday, noon until 8:00 P.M. and Wednesday, 9:00 A.M. until service time.
