RUTHANNE GROKETT Obituary

RUTHANNE (BROWN) GROKETT Ruthanne Grokett, age 89, retired bookkeeper, died Saturday, May 26, 2012, at the Golden Living Center of Chase County in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. A celebration of life service will be held Thursday, 10:00 A.M., at the First Presbyterian Church, USA, in Cottonwood Falls. The Rev. Pat Ireland will officiate. Burial will follow at the Prairie Grove Cemetery west of Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. The daughter of Fred and Jean Leach Brown, Ruthanne was born May 7, 1923, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her family lived in several states before moving to California. She graduated from high school and attended one year of college at Long Beach City College. She and Claude Grokett were married November 6, 1943, in Long Beach, CA. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, USA, in Cottonwood Falls, Presbyterian Women, and taught Sunday School. She served as cookie chairman of the girl scouts for at least one year and had cookies to the ceiling in her dining room. She enjoyed working in her flower garden. She attended her children’s activities and was an avid bridge player. She was a cat lover and worried about her 16 year old cat, Fancy. She worked as a bookkeeper for several businesses in Chase County during her lifetime, including the Soil Conservation Office, Dr. Leo McKee, Jim Bell & Son (for 30+ years), Croy Furniture Store and Funeral Home, and Scribner Insurance Agency. She is survived by her son, Tom Grokett, and his wife, Karen, of Cottonwood Falls; her daughter, Phyllis Scott, of Cottonwood Falls; and six grandchildren: Sarah, Connor, Kyle, and Robin Grokett, Amy Scott, and Haley Nurnberg. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one sister, Betty Williams. There will be no formal family visitation. Friends may call at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home Tuesday, noon until 7:00 P.M., and Wednesday, 10:00 until 4:00, and at the church, 5:00 until 7:00.
