PEARL CATHRINE PAULSEN PHERIGO Pearl C. Pherigo, age 100, of Augusta, formerly of Cottonwood Falls, died Saturday, November 13, 2010, at the LakePoint Nursing Home in Augusta, KS. A celebration of life service will be held Thursday, November 18, 2010, at 1:00 P.M., at the Cottonwood Falls United Methodist Church. Pastor Steve Spencer of the First United Methodist Church of Augusta, KS. will conduct the service. Interment will follow in Prairie Grove Cemetery west of Cottonwood Falls. The daughter of Soren and Johanna Jensen Paulsen, Pearl Cathrine was born September 21, 1910, at the "country home of Soren Paulsen" near Hartford. She graduated from Hartford High School in 1927. She taught school before her marriage to William Joseph Pherigo on June 2, 1939, at the First United Methodist Church in Emporia, KS. He died in July of 1980. She and her husband were farmers. After their marriage, they ran a produce/feed store in Matfield Green & Bazaar, a cream station in Elmdale & Cottonwood Falls, and an ice cream store in Cottonwood Falls. For years, she worked as a caregiver to people who, with extra help and care, were able to stay in their own homes. She celebrated and enjoyed her 100th birthday in September of 2010 with her family and friends present. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Cottonwood Falls and the United Methodist Church of Augusta. She was a Sunday School teacher for years and served a leader for the Cottonwood Falls 4-H Club. She is survived by one son, Joe S. Pherigo of Augusta, KS.; one daughter, Joan Caroline Pherigo Yoakem of Donna, TX; eight grandchildren: Karen Pherigo, Nancy Pherigo, Cheryl Johnson, Karma Linda Yoakem, Vernon Yoakem, Wendi Jones, Amy Pherigo Armstrong, and Joe Loren Pherigo; and 16 great grandchildren: Jeremy and Joshua Schreiber, Claire and Lauren Johnson, Christopher and Vanessa Yoakem, Gilbert, Daniel, Annette, Jesse, Ellen, Charles, Joshua, and Jonathan Jones, and Mariah and William Armstrong.. She was preceded in death by a son, Dan L. Pherigo, a brother, George Paulsen, five sisters: Margaret (Maggie) Ohm, Christine Wehrenberg, Mary Feik, Jessie Jackson, and Ella Paulsen. The family will meet friends Wednesday, from 6:00 until 7:30 P.M. at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home. Friends may call Wednesday, 9:00 A.M. until 7:30 P.M. at the funeral home and Thursday, from 10:00 A.M. until 11:30 A.M. at the church.
