Myrna D. (Ure) Mayo, 89, formerly of rural Elmdale, died July 12, 2024, at Presbyterian Manor, Emporia. She was born June 29, 1935, in Grainfield, KS. Her parents were Eugene Ure and Fern (Shaw) and Charles Heskett. She graduated from Wichita East High School and earned a degree in education from Wichita State University.
On June 12, 1957, she married Ronald J. Mayo Jr. They shared 56 years of marriage, had four sons, and farmed on Middle Creek. Ron preceded her in death in 2013.
Myrna taught English for many years, beginning in Wichita and then in Chase County. She also directed plays and musicals and sponsored Y-Teens/KAYS while teaching at Chase County High School. During the summer she did gardening and helped with farming. Myrna was a member of P.E.O. Chapter BZ and First Presbyterian Church in Cottonwood Falls.
Myrna is survived by: sons James Shaw of Palm Springs, CA, David Mayo and wife Kim of Guilford, MO, Chris Mayo and wife Janet of Salina; grandchildren Zach, Tyler, Max, Ben, Rachel, Luke and one great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, husband, and son Mark Mayo.
Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church, Cottonwood Falls. Private family burial will take place. Family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Monday, July 15, 2024, at Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home.
