MARY ARCHER Obituary

MARY ELIZABETH GLASS ARCHER Mary Archer, age 76, died Friday, April 29, 2011, at her home in Cottonwood Falls, KS. A celebration of life service will be held Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at 2:00 P.M., at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home. Pastor David Hatch of the First Baptist Church of Cottonwood Falls, will conduct the service. Burial will follow in the Bazaar Cemetery, Bazaar, Kansas. The daughter of Roy and Hazel Rae Dyer Glass, Mary Elizabeth, was born August 24, 1934, in Burden, Kansas. She graduated from Burden High School. During her four years of high school, she was a star forward for the Burden High School basketball team. Before she was married, she worked as a dietary aide at Wm. Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield. She and William Bill" Archer were married August 29, 1954, at the First Baptist Church in Burden. He preceded her in death March 01, 2002. She was a homemaker and worked as a card inspector for Hallmark Cards and as a hostess at Hardee’s on the turnpike. She enjoyed people and was a good friend, neighbor, and mother. She was the last surviving charter member (since 1957) of the First Baptist Church in Cottonwood Falls and served as the church treasurer for some time. She loved the outdoors, had a large garden and flower beds, canned much of the produce, and baked (from scratch) delicious food for her family and friends. Her children said that one of their favorite memories of her was "cooking the ingredients to make homemade ice cream" and then each of them getting to crank the ice cream freezer. She went deer hunting with her husband and the family enjoyed fishing and camping at the lake and along the river bank. The family traveled across the United States and she and Bill went to Germany when their son, Tim, was serving in the military there. Bill worked on the railroad, and during the summer, the whole family would go and live wherever he was working (in boxcars provided by the railroad). They saw most of the "points of interest" in Kansas. She liked to crochet and made lap blankets for people who needed them. Her family was very important to her. She is survived by two sons: Thomas Archer of Cottonwood Falls, KS. and Timothy Archer of Louisville, KY.; two daughters: Debra Cain of Fayetteville, N.C. and Pamela Archer of Diamond, MO.; a brother, John Glass of Burden, KS.; a sister, Lois Sayers of Florence, KS.; and eight grandchildren: Thaddeus Cain, Franklin Cain, Daniel Archer, Amanda Archer, David Craney, Allen Craney, Andrew Archer, and Ashton Archer. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister, Edith Glass. There will be no formal family visitation. Friends may call Tuesday from noon until 8:00 P.M. and Wednesday, 9:00 A.M. until service time at the funeral home. Memorial contributions to either the American Cancer Society or Cottonwood Falls First Baptist Church may be sent in care of the funeral home, 201 Cherry, Cottonwood Falls, KS. 66845.
