LEOLA "LOLA" RAINS
Cottonwood Falls Dateline Leola "Lola" Rains, age 81, Cottonwood Falls, formerly of Emporia, died Thursday, January 21, 2010, at the Golden Living Center of Chase County in Cottonwood Falls, KS. A celebration of life service will be held Monday, January 25, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., at the Flint Hills Community Church in Cottonwood Falls with Pastor Jim Bartsch officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Emporia, KS. The daughter of Jonah and Marie Joyce Slawter, Leola Slawter was born April 7, 1928, in Callahan, Florida. She and Harold "Hal" Rains were married February 7, 1954, in Jacksonville, FL. He preceded her in death. After Hal was discharged from the military, they lived in Fort Scott and Pittsburg before they moved to Emporia. She worked as a telephone operator, a comptologist with the Western Union Insurance Company, a secretary at Dolly Madison, and the last 16 years, prior to her retirement in 1990, as a teacher’s aide at Emporia High School in the business department. She loved to fish and enjoyed playing cards and cooking southern-style dishes. She is survived by her son, Steve Rains of Cottonwood Falls, KS.; a daughter, Holly Rains Peterson of Colorado Springs, CO.; a sister, Mary Flint of Florida; a brother, Jonah W. Slawter of Florida; five grandchildren: Haley and Tyson Peterson and Brandon, Matt, and Taylor Rains; and one great granddaughter: Lynnae Beth Rains. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jonah Slawter and Marie Joyce Slawter Mabe, and her sister, Daisy Senuta. Mrs. Rains has been cremated. There will be no formal family visitation.
