Joan (Nelson) Burkhart Joan Burkhart, 86, of Cottonwood Falls, KS, formerly of Lebo, KS died Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at the Chase County Care & Rehabilitation Center in Cottonwood Falls. Pauline Joan, the daughter of Hershel and Maxine (Matthews) Nelson, was born July 26, 1932 in Webb City, MO. She graduated from Webb City High School. Joan was married to James Nevins and to that union was born Matthew, Marc and Cindy Nevins. They later divorced. She and Lyle Burkhart were married and to that union was born Lisa and Lance "Bud". They were married 43 years before their divorce. She worked as a cook at Jay High School in Jay, OK and as a cook at Peter Pan in Emporia before working at Braums and Dolly Madison. Her last employment was with Rigid Steel in Cottonwood Falls as a lead setter. She also worked at the nursing home in Cottonwood Falls. Her family was very important to her and she enjoyed being with her children and their families. She was fond of animals having many cats around her house. Joan is survived by her three sons: Matthew (Dottie) Nevins of Grand Haven, MI and Marc Nevins of Emporia, and Lance (Shelly) Burkhart of Strong City; her two daughters: Cindy (Jerry) Hein of Wichita and Lisa (Gene) Shope of El Dorado; and six grandchildren: Matthew Adam Nevins, Gabriel James Nevins, Joshua Caleb Nevins, Seth Aaron Nevins, Tori Austin Burkhart, Paige Ayanna Burkhart, and six great-grandchildren: Liahm Steven Nevins, Isaac Alexander Nevins, Tristan Nevins, Joseph Aaron Nevins, Brynn Faye Nevins, and Hadley Neinhouse. She was preceded in death by her parents. The family will have a private family service.
