James “Jim” Vernon Cahoone, 87, died June 5, 2021, at his home in rural Cottonwood Falls. Jim was born April 7, 1934, in the upstairs of the home his parents were living in in rural Strong City. After his time in the service was over, Jim purchased the family home and surrounding farm.
Jim served in the United States Army from 1955-1958. His basic training was at Fort Riley, received his mechanic training in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, and then was stationed in Aschaffenburg, Germany as a mechanic in the 10th Infantry Division. He was honorably discharged with rank of Private 1st Class. Jim was a member of Strong City and Cottonwood Falls American Legions before they closed and then became a member of the American Legion in Council Grove.
Jim enjoyed rebuilding antique cars, working on and improving the farm, dancing and playing pitch.
On August 11, 1962, he married Mary Alice Wood. They shared 58 years of marriage.
Jim is survived by: wife, Mary of the home; sons, Matt Cahoone and wife Angie of Emporia, Bryan Cahoone and wife Anne of De Soto, KS; grandchildren, Heidi Cahoone, Erin (Eric) Harkins, Xavier Cahoone, Henry Cahoone, Wyatt Cahoone; great-granddaughter, Corah Sturm; sister-in-law, Carol Cahoone of Strong City; and nephews, Mike Cahoone of Strong City and Mark Cahoone of Cottonwood Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Warren Cahoone; and great-grandson, Emmett Sturm.
Cremation has taken place.
Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 10, 2021, at Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home, Cottonwood Falls, with Reverend Tim Woods officiating. Burial will follow in Prairie Grove Cemetery, with military honors conducted by Kansas National Honor Guard.
