IYLA MAY PARKMAN CARTER

Plymouth Community, Kansas Iyla M. Carter, 78, died Saturday, November 28, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, MO. A celebration of life service will be held Wednesday, December 2, 2009, at 2:00 P.M., at the Saffordville United Methodist Church with Pastor Lori Schwilling officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery. Iyla May Parkman, the daughter of Virgil E. and Ethel Ruth Rice Parkman, was born April 5, 1931, in Emporia, KS. She attended grade school at Forest Hill and graduated from Emporia High School in 1949. She attended college for two years and completed several courses at Flint Hills Vocational Technical School. She and Robert E. Carter were married January 18, 1953, at First Methodist Church in Emporia, KS. She was a Southwestern Bell telephone operator from 1950 until 1978. She worked as a Central Supply technician at Newman Hospital and as a receptionist at The Farm and Hetlinger Developmental Services, Inc., retiring in 2006. She was a farmer/ rancher. She was a member of the Saffordville United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Communication Workers of America and the Telephone Pioneers where she served as Past President of the Emporia chapter and held office in the state organization. She was a member of Farm Bureau, Flint Hills Saddle Club, and a geology project leader in 4-H. She was Vice-President of the Tigg Cattle Company. She is survived by her husband of the home in Plymouth Community; two daughters: Barbara Henson of Emporia and Debra Byarlay of Salina; her brother, Eldon Parkman of Emporia; her sister, Linda Black of Phoenix, AZ.; her step-mother, Margaret Parkman of Emporia; five grandchildren: Jessica Ardery, Megan Henson, Jarrett Henson, Amber Pracht, and Aaron Byarlay; and three great grandchildren: Acacia Pracht, Eian Pracht, and Cade Henson. She was preceded in death by her son, John R. Carter on May 15, 2007; her father; her mother, Ethel Ruth Cunningham; a brother, John Roy Parkman; and a sister, Mary Lee Egner. There will be a family visitation Tuesday, from 6:30 until 8:00 P.M., at the Saffordville United Methodist Church. Friends may call Tuesday, from 9:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M., at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home and Wednesday, from 10:00 A.M., until service time at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Saffordville United Methodist Church or the Lyon County 4-H Carter Memorial Fund sent in care of the funeral home, 201 Cherry, Cottonwood Falls, KS. 66845.
