For a short time she owned and managed a general store in Cedar Point. She graduated from Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia with both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Library Science. After she finished her bachelor’s degree she taught science and math and spent time in California where she attended college. She was a librarian in the Kansas City, Kansas Library for 11 years. When she returned home to help with the family farm, in 1976, she "retired." She was in charge of the farm accounting (Corporation Accountant) from 1936 until 1988. She did this accounting even when she was in California and Kansas City. When the family home was sold in 1996, she moved to Emporia to be closer to her sister, Virginia. They lived in the duplexes at Presbyterian Manor. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Cedar Point and spent many hours doing volunteer work there. She transferred her membership to First United Methodist Church in Emporia when she moved to Emporia. She enjoyed working in the garden and the flower beds at the Manor. She is survived by three brothers: George Whitcomb of Botthel, Washington, Gerald Whitcomb of DeWitt, Arkansas, and Marcus Whitcomb of Lincoln, Nebraska; one sister, Rhoda Whitcomb of Forney, Texas; a sister-in-law, Lorene Whitcomb, of Marquette, Kansas; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by two brothers: Robert and Warren Whitcomb, one sister: Virginia Whitcomb; and a brother and sister in infancy. There will be no formal family visitation. The family is grateful to the staff at Presbyterian Manor for making the later years of her life pleasant. They became her family here.
