Don A. Ayers, 71, of Cottonwood Falls, died Sunday, July 6, 2008, at Newman Regional Health in Emporia, Kansas. A celebration of life memorial service will be held Thursday, July 10, 2008, at 2:00 P.M., at the Bazaar Schoolhouse Community Building in Bazaar with The Rev. Melody Kimbrel, of the Bazaar United Methodist Church, officiating.

He has been cremated and his ashes will be scattered at a later date.

The son of Alvin Reuben and Nellie Grace Mitchell Ayers, Don Alvin was born January 20, 1937, in Chase County, Kansas. He was married to Rita Webb and they divorced. He and Jene Brogan were married June 8, 1977, in Emporia.

Don worked for Bluestem Co-Op for 17 years. He was a herdsman for Weise Cattle Co. and other companies and he retired from Didde Web Press in 1993 after working as an assembler for 161/2 years.

He was a member of the Bazaar United Methodist Church and on the Board of Trustees and served on the Parish Council years ago. He and several other men were the ones who did the "Men’s Cooking Breakfast" on several Saturday mornings. He made noodles and helped the Cottonwood Falls United Methodist Women serve meals during the Chase County Fair. He was a volunteer for the Flint Hills Rodeo including cleaning the main street, following the street dance, for the annual parade. He served on the Nominating Committee of R.E.A. He would raise and help his 4-H kids care for their sheep for the fair and would spend the whole day Tuesday watching the showing of the sheep and supporting his kids. He would enter his produce in the contests each year. He loved to work with children and he and his wife were Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus for three years during Chase County Country Christmas Celebration. He loved to hunt, fish, and trap. He was, also, an organ donor.

He is survived by his wife, Jene, of the home; two sons: Alvin Wade Ayers of Burlington, KS. and Randall Duane Parker of Wichita, KS.; three daughters: Donna Lynn Ayers of Wichita, KS., Vicki Leigh Housholder of Emporia, KS., and Deborah Denise Callahan of Olathe, KS.; one brother: James Lloyd Adkins of Cottonwood Falls, KS.; one sister, Carol Cahoone of Strong City, KS.; 17 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William J. Adkins.

The family will meet friends and family Wednesday, from 6:30 until 7:30 P.M. at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home. Friends may call to sign the book Wednesday, noon until 8:00 P.M.
