DENNIS A."PETE" VARELMAN Dennis A. Varelman, age 51, died Saturday, May 14, 2011, at his home in Strong City. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life service will be held Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at 11:00 A.M., at the Chase County Lake Shelter House, west of Cottonwood Falls. (Casual dress.) Inurnment will be held in Prairie Grove Cemetery at a later date. The son of Charles A. and Carrie Nellora "Nell" Clark Varelman (Baker), Dennis was born April 22, 1960, in Emporia, KS. He graduated from Chase County High School in 1978. He worked for local ranchers and farmers while growing up in Chase County. He worked for the Chase County Road and Bridge Department, for 14 years, as a road grader, until he was forced to retire, due to his health, in 1998. He and Margaret L. Mize Hughes were married March 5, 2010 in Emporia, KS. He loved to hunt and fish. He really enjoyed teaching anyone’s children to hunt and fish. He was a very good and patient teacher. He enjoyed reading and spent hours reading books on various subjects. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, of the home; one daughter, Penny Kemph and granddaughter, Kadria Belle Kemph, of Fort Supply, OK.; a brother, Tom Varelman, of Brush, CO.; four sisters: Sue Parker and Karen Baker of Emporia, KS., Nancy Ramirez of Pawhuska, OK., and Lenora Varelman of Council Grove, KS.; his step-father, Russell Baker, of Emporia, KS.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Vicki Sue Varelman. There will be no formal family visitation. Memorial contributions to the Chase County Recreation Commission, to be used for the 2012 Kids’ Fishing Derby, may be sent in care of the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home, 201 Cherry, Cottonwood Falls, KS. 66845.
