BONNIE JEAN OSBORN SHORT Bonnie Short, age 88, of Cottonwood Falls, KS., died Thursday, December 8, 2011, at the Golden Living Center of Chase County in Cottonwood Falls. A celebration of life service will be held Monday, December 12, 2011, at 2:00 P.M., at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home with Pastor Rick Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Prairie Grove Cemetery west of Cottonwood Falls. The daughter of Harvey and Ethel Lenora Myers Osborn, Bonnie was born May 28, 1923, at Cottonwood Falls, KS. She graduated from Chase County Community High School in 1941. She and William "Bill" Short were married April 6, 1945, in Wichita, KS. They spent most of their married life as ranchers/farmers in Chase County. He preceded her in death on June 30, 2005. She worked in three Chase County offices: Extension, Triple A, and Soil and Conservation District, all in Cottonwood Falls. She was president of the Chase County Historical Society for eight years as well as serving as a Director of the Kansas State Historical Society in Topeka for 12 years. She was on the State Board of Extension Home Economics and has a pin which says "Past President: Home-Family-Community Cooperative Extension Service." She was, also, State Citizenship Chairman and a Director of the Southeast district of that organization. She was diagnosed with diabetes in June, 1930 and started taking insulin injections in August of that same year. The Joslin Diabetes Foundation and The Diabetic Fund, both of Boston, awarded her medals in 1981 for having taken insulin for 50 years. She also received a medal for 54 years from the Kansas American Diabetes Association of Wichita in 1985. In 2007, Bonnie received three medals, one bronze for 25 years, one silver for 50 years, and a gold for 75 successful years of "Insulin Therapy" from the Eli Lilly Company in Indianapolis, Ind. She is survived by one sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Jane Pinkston of rural Cottonwood Falls, KS., nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by two sisters: Helen Maxine Osborn and Juanita Faye Miser and two brothers: John "Jack" Wesley Osborn and Harvey "Roy" Osborn. There will be no formal family visitation. Friends may call Sunday, 1:00 until 4:00 P.M. and Monday, 9:00 until service time.
