ALMA ATKINS Obituary

ALMA JEAN SHELTON ATKINS Alma Jean Atkins, age 91, of Strong City, KS.,died Saturday, June 4, 2011, at Morris County Hospital in Council Grove, Kansas. A celebration of life service will be held Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at 2:00 P.M., at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home in Cottonwood Falls. After the service, she will be cremated and inurned at a later date in Strong City Cemetery. The daughter of Charles and Alma Knapenburger Cowden, Alma Jean was born May 25, 1920, at Lawton, OK. She graduated from high school and attended one year of college. She married B.P. Shelton in Madill, OK. and they, later, divorced. She and Kenneth Atkins were married November 2, 1946, at Dubuque, IA., and he died in 1986. She was proud of her American Indian background and was a card-carrying member of the Choctaw Tribe. Her family moved to Chase County in 1974. She was a homemaker and washed dishes at the Flint Hills Truck Stop in Strong City when it was open 24 hours a day. She was a member of the Veterans’ of Foreign Wars Auxillary. She enjoyed playing Yahtzee, watching Jeopardy and spent many hours working crossword puzzles. She is survived by a son, David Shelton of Strong City; two daughters: April Pike of Ventura, CA., and Gloria Skaggs of Prescott Valley, AZ.; and over 60 grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands; a son, John Atkins; two sisters: Maxine Maynor and Betty Jo Waley; a grandson, Robert Michael Shelton; a granddaughter, Lori Dannatt; and a great grandson, Jacob Shelton. The family will meet friends Tuesday, from 6:30 until 8:00 P.M., at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home, Tuesday, from noon until 8:00 P.M. and Wednesday, from 9:00 A.M. until service time. Memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association may be sent in care of the funeral home, 201 Cherry, Cottonwood Falls, KS. 66845.
