Rick Emery Weiss

Rick Weiss, age 65, of Argonia, KS, formerly of Chase County, died Sunday, December 2, 2018 at Hospital District #6 in Harper, KS. The son of Robert Emery and Barbara Jean (Brandon) Weiss, Rick was born September 14, 1953 in Parsons, KS. He graduated from Oswego High School in 1971 and went to Labette Community College in Parsons, KS on a baseball scholarship. He earned his B.S. degree in Education from Emporia State University and his Master’s Degree in Education-Specialist in Education from Wichita State University. He and Robin Ann Murphy were married August 2, 1980 in Conway Springs.

Rick began his teaching career in Conway Springs as a Secondary Social Studies teacher in 1976.  In 1984 he served as the Athletic Director/Administrative Assistant for one year. In 1985 he became the Elementary Principal of Kyle Trublood Elementary School in Conway Springs until 1989 when he became the Superintendent of Schools and Elementary Principal in South Haven, KS. Rick accepted the Superintendent of Schools position at USD #284 in Chase County on July 1, 1991 and proudly served there until June 20, 2007. Only July 1, 2007 Rick became the Superintendent of Schools at USD #353 in Wellington, KS where he worked until his retirement on July 1, 2016.

Rick loved to hunt birds: geese, ducks, pheasants, and quail. He LOVED baseball. He coached his entire teaching career at Conway Springs. He loved to play baseball eventually co-ed softball and fast pitch softball. He especially loved coaching his girls and eventually Alex. He was instrumental in the softball program at Chase County and introduced travel ball to his girls and the county.

He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Parish at Danville Catholic Church.

Rick is survived by his wife, Robin, of the home; a son, Alex Weiss of El Dorado; four daughters: Amber (David) Griffin of Burns, Ashley (Ryan) Anderson of Maryville, MO, Angela (Zack) Sigler of Augusta, and Andrea Weiss of El Dorado; his mother, Barbara Weiss of Oswego; a brother, Michael Weiss of California; and 11 grandchildren: Brock, Wyatt, and Hannah Griffin, Shae, Stella, and Parker Sigler, Owen, Eli, Adyn, an Ally Anderson, and Jaxen Milton. He was preceded in death by his father.

There will be a visitation Friday, from 6:30 until 8:00 PM at St. Anthony Catholic Hall in Strong City, KS. A celebration of life memorial service will be held Saturday, December 15 at 1:00 PM in the Chase County Jr/Sr High School gymnasium in Cottonwood Falls. Inurnment at Homestead Cemetery in Homestead Community will be held at a later date.
