Galen Wheeler Simmons Galen W. Simmers, 72, of rural Elmdale died Friday, October 5, 20189 at his home after a long battle with cancer. The son of Nelson and Anna (Monroe) Simmons. Galen was born November 28, 1945 in Strong City, KS. He graduated from Strong City High School and attended one year of college at Kansas Teachers College of Emporia. Galen and Diane Davis were married and to that union was born two sons: Kent and Nathan. They later divorced. He and Gwen (Whitlock) McCallum were married August 5, 1995 in Elmdale. Galen was a farmer and worked as a dyno technician at Detroit Diesel. He was a member of Elmdale United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Chase County Health Services board for many years, coached baseball, was a leader in the Diamond 4-H Club, was on the Middle Creek Watershed board, and enjoyed gardening and hunting. He followed his kids and grandkids sporting events. He is survived by his wife, Gwen, of the home; two sons: Kent Simmons (Nikki) of Emporia and Nathan Simmons (Lydia) of Strong City; a daughter: Dusty Hazelton (Tony) of Elmdale; two brothers: Herb Simmons (Diane) of Bowling Green, KY and Dee Simmons (Ardith) of Haysville; one sister: Mary Hunnicutt of St. Charles, MO; and five grandchildren: Parker and Mikinzi Simmons, Scott and Brock Hazelton, and Nolan Simmons. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:30 until 8:00 pm at the Elmdale United Methodist Church. A celebration of life memorial service will be held Thursday, October 11 at 10:00 at the church. Interment of his cremains will be held at a later date in Elmdale Stoehr Cemetery. The family will give excess donations to Elmdale United Methodist Church and the American Cancer Society.
