Charles Swift, 97, of Matfield Green, Kansas died Thursday, October 25, 2018 at the Chase County Care & Rehabilitation Center in Cottonwood Falls. The son of Fred and Jennie (Cox) Swift, Charles William was born July 6, 1921 in Matfield Green. He completed grade school at the Booster Station School and went to work. He and Betty Bill Payton were married August 1, 1944 at the courthouse in Cottonwood Falls.
He was a farmer/rancher all of his life. In his early years he spent time coon hunting. He and Betty worked together on the farm, had a large garden and sold produce at the Farmers’ Market. They served as caretakers for the Matfield Cemetery for 26 years from 1987-2013. His favorite time was spent with his children, grandchildren and large family.
Charles is survived by his wife, Betty, of the home; a sister, Ruby Everett of Cottonwood Falls; two grandchildren: Teresa (Greg) Campbell of Cottonwood Falls and Jesse (Darla) Long of Burlington; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Delores Long; a son, Charles Hugh Swift; a sister, Crystal Smith; and brothers: Harold, Ralph, Jewell, Forrester, Fred, George, and Robert Swift.
A celebration of life service will be held Sunday at 3:00 P.M. at the Flint Hills Community Church in Cottonwood Falls with burial in Matfield Cemetery.
