Gabriel “Gabe” Demmitt, 26, died Sunday, November 23, 2008, as a result of a pickup/train accident in rural Cedar Point.  A celebration of life service will be held Friday, November 28, 2008, at 2:00 P.M., at the

Cedar Point Grade School in Cedar Point, Kansas.  Burial will follow in Cedar Point Cemetery.

The son of Duane G. and Carol Sue Holtsclaw Demmitt , Gabriel Lee Demmitt was born February 26, 1982, in Newton, Kansas.  He worked at Agco, a farm equipment manufacturing company in Hesston.  He liked to fish with family and friends.

He is survived by his mother, Carol Sue Grosse of Hillsboro; his sister, Chelsea Demmitt of Hillsboro; a brother, Aaron Grosse of Lawrence; step-father, Harvey Grosse of Peabody; grandparents: Marie & Bennie Holtsclaw of Cedar Point, Jim and Martha Demmitt of Arkansas, Rita Taylor of Topeka, and Rose Grosse of Peabody, two aunts: Tammy Demmitt and Tina Cramer of Topeka, great aunts: Carol Larid and Allora Crowover; and a niece, Skyler Marlar of Hillsboro.  He was preceded in death by his father, Duane Demmitt on May 13, 1992; his grandfather, Jack Taylor, and two aunts: Heidi Holtsclaw-Ebersole and Cynthia Ann Holtsclaw.

Strong City, Kansas

Mary A. Showalter, 79, died Sunday, November 9, 2008, at her home in

Strong City, KS.  A celebration of her life will be held Wednesday, November 12, 2008, at 2:00 P.M., at the Flint Hills Community Church in Cottonwood Falls, KS., with Pastor David Gass officiating.  Burial will follow in Prairie Grove Cemetery in rural Cottonwood Falls.

The daughter of Robert E. and Edith L. Allen Mackey, Mary Alice was born August 1, 1929, in Madison, KS.  She graduated from Madison High School.  She and Lawrence “Larry” Showalter were married July 1, 1951, in Hutchinson, KS.  He died October 5, 2000.  She was a mother, homemaker, and an artist.  She enjoyed helping ours and caring for her flowers.  She spent many hours planting and caring for a flower bed in the Strong City Park near her home.  She was a member of Cedar Point Community Church in Cedar Point.

She is survived by her son, Tom Showalter of Strong City, KS.; a daughter, Patti Craghead of Jetmore, KS.; three brothers:  Albert Mackey of Newton, Kenneth Mackey of Cottonwood Falls, and Lee Mackey of Dodge City; a sister, Carol Ropfogel of Naples, FL.; five grandchildren: Darin Eubanks, Faith Brokar, Joy Eubanks, Joshua Showalter, and Jennifer Showalter; and six great grandchildren:  Zoe, Riley, Ashten, London, Trevor, and Carson.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Joni Showalter; a son, Greg Showalter; and two sisters:  Barbara Crackel and Shirley Mackey.

The family will meet friends Tuesday, from 6:00 until 7:30 P.M., at the Flint Hills Community Church.  Friends may call Tuesday, noon until 4:00 P.M., at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home and Wednesday, 9:00 A.M. until service time at the Flint Hills Community Church.

Akron, Ohio

Lyle B. Schwilling, age 80, formerly of Chase County, KS., died Friday, 31, 2008, in Akron, OH.  The funeral service will be held Thursday, November 6, 2008, at 11:00 A.M., at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home with Pastor Lori Schwilling officiating.  Graveside military honors will be conducted by a McConnell Air Force Base honor guard at Prairie Grove Cemetery in rural Cottonwood Falls, KS.

The son of Joseph and Esther Twining Schwilling, Lyle B. was born December 24, 1927, in Clements, KS.  He graduated from Chase County High School in 1946.  He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1946 and was assigned to the Air Weather Wing stationed in Tokyo, Japan.  One of his proudest accomplishments was climbing Mt. Fuji at the age of 29.  He graduated from Kansas State University in 1952, with a degree in journalism.  His first job was as a sports writer/announcer for the Topeka Daily Capital, followed by several years with United Press International (UP) in New Orleans.  He joined PR agency Carl Byoir Associates in New York City and Hallmark in Kansas City.  In 1966, he moved to Akron to accept a position in the public relations division of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.  Two yeas later, he was named Public Relations Manager for the Goodyear Aerospace Corporation (now Loral).  He retired as Director of Public Relations.

He married Penny on Nov. 21, 2005.  He always claimed he was a “Kansas farmer at heart” and purchased a small farm close to his home.  One of his favorite hobbies was woodcutting and, after his retirement, he had a small enterprise supplying dozens of customers with truckloads of firewood each fall.

He is survived by Penny, his wife, of the home; three brothers:  Russell Schwilling of Osage Beach, MO., Wayne Schwilling of Strong City, KS., and Harry Schwilling of Wichita, KS.; two sisters:  Bernice Weamer of Ottawa, KS. and Shirley Cowdrey of Olathe, KS.  He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Joseph Schwilling, Jr., Howard Schwilling , and Marvin Schwilling and three sisters:  Dorothy Wagner, Janette Duke, and Mary Louise Shehan.
